Population: In the middle of the 20thcentury, there were about 200 thousand gazelles in Kazakhstan, now their numberis estimatedto be about 15thousand.

Status: A rare and endangered species declining innumbers. (Category III).

Habitat: Until the mid-20th century, it inhabited almost the entiresemi-desert and desert zones of Kazakhstan, with a continuous range from theCaspian Sea to the Ili Basin. The northern boundary ran along the 47thparallel; currently, in most parts of its range, it has shifted far to thesouth. Separate isolated populations have formed in Taukum,Moiynkum, Kyzylkum, Ustirt-Mangyshlak, and in the Ili Basin. Theirrangeis no longer continuous. Presently, goitered gazelles are absent from theAlakol and Zaisan basins and much of the northern part of the Betpak-Dala desert.
