Status. Category III. The range and number are declining. It is also listed in the Red Books of Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan.

Dissemination. The subspecies range covers the mountains of Central Asia — the Tien Shan, Pamir-Alai, the Hindu Kush, and the Western Himalayas. Kazakhstan has the northern part of the subspecies range, which includes the Dzungarsky Alatau with the Toksanbay, Koyandytau, Altyn-Emel, Kaikan and the Tianshan ridges — Ketmen, Terskey Alatau, Kungey Alatau, Zailiysky Alatau, Kyrgyz Alatau, Talas Alatau, Ugam Range, and Karzhantau. In the middle of the 20th century, the bear disappeared in the Syrdarya Karatau.
