Population: In recent decades, between 120 and 130 pairs have been observed nesting in Kazakhstan. Globally, the population is estimated at between 28.2 thousand and 58.4 thousand mature individuals.
Status: A rare and endangered species with dwindling numbers (Category II).
Habitat: In the first half of the 20th century, sea eagles were common in many reservoirs of Kazakhstan, but over the past 30-40 years it has disappeared from a number of places. In the 1980s and 1990s, it nested in the Kazakh partof the Volga River delta, on Kushum (Volga-Ural interfluve), in the floodplain of the Ural River, on lakes of the Kostanay region, in the Syrdarya valley, in the Balkash-Alakol depression and in various eastern parts of the republic.
