Population: The Kazakh population is estimated at between 20.9 thousand and 31.5 thousand pairs (as of 2018). The global population is about 75 thousand adults (as of 2021) but has displayed a tendency to decrease.

Status: A rare and endangered species whose numbers havebecome relatively large after rapidly declining (Category V).

Habitat: It occupies the steppes and northern deserts of Eurasia from the lower reaches of the Danube River to Transbaikalia and the shores of the Yellow Sea. Southward its range penetrates the deserts of Central Asia. Its nesting is wide spread in Kazakhstan, with the exception of the highlands. It winters in southern Asia, Arabia and Africa.
