Population: The number of the muteswans in Kazakhstan has not been specifically estimated, but the species is consideredstable. The global population is estimated at approximately 598 thousand to 615 thousand individuals.
Status: Non-endangered and non-game species but with ecological and cultural significance.
Habitat: Muteswans migrate and breed over almost all lowland areas of Kazakhstan. In autumn, it can fly to high-altitude areas, such as Big Almaty Lake (2500m above sea level). It winters in the Northern Caspian Sea, in Mangystau,sometimes in the Aral Sea off Barsakelmes Island, and occasionally south of Turkestan and Shymkent in mild winters. It lives on fresh and salt lakes with thickets of reeds or cattails.
