Population: Rare. About 10 animals live in the Almaty reserve. Lynx is rare in the Western Tien Shan – only 4 or 5 individuals are known to live in the Aksu-Zhabagli reserve.
Status: A rare and endangered species (Category III). Also listed in the Red Books of Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan.
Habitat: The range of the Turkistan lynx covers the mountains of Central Asia. In Kazakhstan, it inhabits the Tian Shan, Zhongar Alatau, Tarbagatai, and Saur mountains. In the Syrdarya Karatau, the lynx disappeared around the 1940s.
